On Tuesday, the wushu events took place at the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines.
Nothing dramatic happened during the event like the silat pencak incident
involving our Malaysian athlete, but one story will definitely make you shed a tear.
Indonesian athlete Edgar Xavier Marvelo competed in the men’s wushu events of Gunshu and Daoshu, and he managed to bag two gold medals for the Indonesian team.
While he was celebrating, he didn't know that a devastating news awaits him – his father had passed away while he was competing.
The official 2019 SEA Games Facebook page updated his win with a bittersweet caption.
“Winning the golds for men's Gunshu and Daoshu events of Wushu yesterday came as a bittersweet moment for Indonesian Edgar Xavier Marvelo.”
“People in his team were in tears after his victory and those were not just tears of joy. Edgar's father died while he was competing in the event and he was only informed about it after winning the gold, bringing him to tears.”
“He dedicates his gold medal to his country and to his father.”
Edgar also shared a photo of him standing on the podium on his Instagram profile, with the caption: “2 Gold Medals, for Papa.”
He eventually flew back to Indonesia to pay his last respects to his late father.
Netizens from around the world gave their condolences to Edgar and assured him that his dad would definitely be proud of him.
Congratulations and condolences to Edgar. This will definitely be an unforgettable SEA Games for him and his family.
