Datuk Lee Chong Wei's chances of winning his first world title and Asian Games gold medal after so many years are dampened.

The national badminton player has withdrawn from the World Championships in Nanjing, China and the Asian Games in Indonesia citing health issues.

The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) said in a statement on Tuesday that he is currently suffering from a respiratory problem.

"We regret to announce that Datuk Lee has informed BAM that he is unwell and suffering from a respiratory related disorder. His doctor has advised him to rest and undergo treatment," BAM stated.

"For the time being, he cannot undergo any intensive physical activity for a period of at least one month and therefore we have to withdraw Datuk Lee from his participation at the BWF World Championships the Asian Games 2018."

Get well soon, Datuk!
Lee's participation in the upcoming games had raised a few doubts when he had been missing from training since last Monday, as reported by The Star.

Initially, people thought that he was absent due to burnout from back-to-back tournaments in the past couple of months.

Although it is unfortunate to hear our national hero missing out on an opportunity to put Malaysia at the top in the world, we wish for his speedy recovery.

BAM has also urged everyone to respect his privacy during this time.

We look forward to seeing you up and running again, Datuk Lee Chong Wei!

The BWF World Championships 2018 is scheduled from 30 July to 5 August, while the Asian Games 2018 will be held from 18 August to 2 September.
