Fear. We all have them. Some of us fear the dark, heights, rejection, drowning, flying, etc. Being afraid of certain things are normal. These fears help protect us from harm. But being too fearful can prevent us from living life to the fullest. Fret not though. Many fears can be overcome by practicing just a few simple steps.
Step 1: Recognise Your Fear
List down your fears, whatever they may be. This will be your first step. Sure, it sounds simple, but this is an extremely powerful step because you are actually acknowledging your fears. So if you’ve done it, give yourself a pat on the back.
Step 2: Visualize Overcoming Them
Now, close your eyes. Breathe in and out slowly and picture yourself facing a particular fear. You are now starring in your own horror movie. Cue Michael Jackson’s Thriller. But wait, don’t open your eyes! Play out your fears. Visualise yourself overcoming that fear and emerging victorious.
This is a very crucial step because you are mentally preparing yourself for D-day and in the process, taking baby steps in gaining confidence.
Step 3: Tackle Your Fear
Perhaps you’re scared of bungee jumping. But you’ve been secretly wishing to take that leap of faith. As the Nike slogan goes, ‘Just Do It’. You’ve nothing to lose. In fact, you might find that the adrenaline rush is so powerful and end up becoming a regular bungee jumper.
Or maybe you fear speaking in front of a crowd. Try practicing in front of the mirror first, then to a small audience of trusted family members and friends before finally tackling it head-on in front of your colleagues or members of the public. Who knows, you might just be the next Toastmaster.
Step 4: Repeat
Okay, let's be real here. You won’t overcome your fear with just one try. It might take days, even years before you finally overcome it. But don’t give up. If you fail, try and try again.
Go ahead, take a look at life from the other side. Try something that you’ve never done before. After all, #YOLO.
