If you’re a 90s kid, we’re pretty sure you’re familiar with arguably the greatest female pop group in history – the Spice Girls. Few days ago, the entertainment industry received a beautiful 20th anniversary gift from them. Melanie B or more fondly known as Mel B, Geri Halliwell, and Emma Bunton appeared in a video uploaded to Youtube titled “Spice Girls – GEM”. The girls thanked their fans for all their support for the past 20 years and wanted to throw a party for them soon. The video has raked up to 1.2 million views at the time of post.
Watch it here:
After the video went viral, a lot of people speculated that the Spice Girls have formed a new group named ‘GEM’ sans two key members – Victoria Beckham and Melanie C. Some fans pointed out that ‘GEM’ could be an acronym for the three members that appeared in the video which are Geri, Emma, and Melanie. It turns out that ‘GEM’ is just a name of their website for their reunion according
to Mel B in an interview with Access Hollywood Live
The girls are reportedly making preparations for their 20th anniversary concert tour soon. The three of them hope that Sporty Spice and Posh Spice will be able to participate in the tour. Mel C however disclosed
that she’s currently busy working on her solo album and Mrs. Beckham has made a stance from the start that she won’t be joining in. The last time the girls reunited and performed live in front of a public audience was during the closing ceremony of the London Olympics in 2012.
So, fast forward 20 years later, where are these girls now and what have they been up to? Let’s find out.
Mel B/Scary Spice
Mel B has been appearing a lot on our TV screens lately, she’s even appearing across the continents! She has appeared in X Factor UK
, X Factor Australia
and The Voice Kids: Australia
as a judge and mentor. Her latest projects include being a judge for America’s Got Talent
, a reality talent show which she has been appearing in since 2013 and a presenter for Lip Sync Battle UK
. What about her love life? She’s currently happily married to film producer, Stephen Belafonte, and has three children. Looks like Scary Spice has a steady career for the past few years despite the personal dramas that have been surrounding her over two decades.
Victoria Beckham/Posh Spice
Ever since marrying one of the most charming and good looking footballers on Earth, Victoria has made it clear that she’s investing her post Spice Girl years to her family and her fashion line. This mother of four is now a fashion designer and business mogul for her brand, Victoria Beckham. She has appeared as the front cover of countless international fashion magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. Posh Spice has expressed no interest in any Spice Girls reunion or returning to the music scene.
Mel C/Sporty Spice
Sporty Spice is currently working on her solo album and is concentrating on being a mom to her 7-year-old daughter, Scarlet. She appeared as a judge on Asia’s Got Talent
in 2015 alongside David Foster, Anggun, and Vanness Wu. She’s also set to appear on the second season of the show later this year. Mel C has been doing really well and is reportedly in a healthier condition compared to her depression years more than a decade ago. We’re so happy and proud of you!
Emma Bunton/Baby Spice
The most adorable Spice Girl out of the lot looks like she hasn’t aged that much. We wonder what miraculous skincare has she been using for the past 20 years. She’s currently a presenter for Too Much TV
, and has previously appeared alongside Mel B as a guest judge in the X Factor UK
in 2014. Besides singing and hosting, she also recently ventured into the radio world as a presenter. She’s currently tied to two stations – Heart FM and Heart Extra in UK. Emma is still in a relationship with her long-time beau, Jade Jones since 1998. The couple got engaged in 2011 and have two sons together.
Geri Halliwell/Ginger Spice
Halliwell tied the knot last year with Team Principle of the Infiniti Red Bull Racing Formula One team, Christian Horner. She also has a daughter with her previous flame, Sacha Gervasi. Just like Mel B, Geri is also busy travelling the world appearing as a judge on reality talent shows. She became a judge on Australia’s Got Talent
in 2013 and also appeared as a guest judge on the X Factor UK
in 2012 and 2010. Apart from singing and being a judge on TV shows, Ginger Spice has a penchant for writing; she has been offered a six-book deal with Macmillan Children’s Books. The book series is about 9-year-old Ugenia whose character is loosely based on her. In 2008, she was the most successful female celebrity children's author after her book sold over 250,000 copies in the first five months.
These girls have come a long way since their “Wannabe” days proving that they have made their mark in the entertainment industry. The new crop of singers and groups today may have to thank these girls for being such an inspiration for the past decades. We hope one day we’ll be able to catch all five girls in an epic reunion and relive the good old days. Here’s to another 20 years of girl power!
